"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; this is to have succeeded."

........................Ralph Waldo Emerson

A Very Personal Note

If these beautiful words of Emerson resonate with you, allow me to speak off topic. Some years ago, circumstances thrust Linda and me to discover the Ronald McDonald House of Roanoke, Virginia. For those of you unfamiliar with this organization, very ill patients who are in need of treatments for their diseases, are given the opportunity to stay at R.M. House, along with their entire families, for free and as long as necessary while they are receiving treatments. Roanoke is in the center of a very rural region of the state, and having two major state-of-the-art hospitals here draws people from at least a 100 mile radius. Patients can be young or old, and are usually not able to pay for their lodging during their treatments, let alone pay the bill for the entire family to stay also.

Whenever you think you have some pretty heavy problems (i.e., dirty sensor, which lens should I buy), I invite you to visit any Ronald McDonald House around the world. You will not see a braver person than a young child afflicted with a serious or even life-threatening disease. His or her ability to just go forward with each day and to smile in the face of pain and even death, is amazing and very spiritual to me.

We are proud supporters of Ronald McDonald House of Roanoke. Maybe it's our way of trying to leave the world a tiny, minuscule bit better by helping the wonderful people who work and volunteer there do what they do. If you would care to donate to this organization, any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Emerson was astutely aware of the immense positive effect the act of giving has on our souls. You cannot give your own heart any better present or medicine than the act of helping the ill and less fortunate in your midst.

We hope you enjoy the photography and artwork presented on this website. Copper Hill is a very rural, mountain community in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, elevation 3,500 ft. The air is rarefied, the flora and fauna are incredibly abundant, and there is no place we'd rather be.

Enjoy your stay!
